Socialee Take – Canadian Street Dog (mmmmm yummy)

#Street Dog #nomnom #toronto

If you’ve read any of our other Socialee Take posts, you’ll see there seems to be an underlying theme of food!! That is because both Thera and I love food, and it tends to be the food that isn’t necessarily deemed ‘good for you’. Hence me having gained a couple of Dubai stones since my arrival 9 years ago! We also see food as a very sociable activity, we love trying new places together, but it’s also great to have a group of you at a restaurant or at home trying different foods, catching up and of course planning the next adventure.

Thera is originally from Canada and I actually had the pleasure of spending a year there working, way back when. I was based just outside downtown Toronto and loved venturing into the city at every opportunity. Last year in September we headed back for Thera’s brothers wedding and we managed to also get a couple days in the city.

One of my lasting memories of the city was the street vendors selling hot dogs, but not just any hot dog, they had all types of proper sausages, ranging from your Polish Swojska and Krajanska to your spicy Italian and of course the traditional Frankfurter. But it’s the help yourself condiments that really make these hot dogs so tasty. As you can see from the picture, you try and stuff as much on there as you can, and when eating try to get as little of it down your front as possible.

Toronto has a big street food culture and there are food trucks all over the place. There is now a Food Truck Alley at 141 Queen Street and there is even a Street Food App which tells you where the food trucks are and when they are open. But in my personal opinion the best street dogs come from the guys with the small setup, they have the burner and steamer inside and all the condiments setup for you outside.

These guys could always be found on game day. If the Toronto Blue Jays are playing, the street carts are out in force and whilst you can get a foot long in the Rogers Centre during the game. It’s well worth the wait to grab a street dog on the way out! Or do both 🙂 So good nom nom!
